Botox®
Botox Cosmetic is a non-surgical injection which can temporarily smooth dynamic lines and wrinkles of the face and neck. A variety of wrinkles can be treated including forehead creases, frown lines, crow’s feet, and neck bands. Botox, which is the purified form of botulinum toxin, works by blocking the nerve impulses and temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for wrinkling. The result is a smoother, more youthful and refreshed appearance. Botox Cosmetic was FDA approved in 2002.
How does Botox work?
Botox is the sterilized and purified form of botulinum toxin. When injected into certain muscles responsible for wrinkling, Botox blocks the nerve impulses and temporarily relaxes the muscles. This allows current wrinkles to be smoothed and keeps new wrinkles from occurring. The results of Botox cosmetic are temporary and the injections will need to be repeated every 3 to 6 months in order to maintain the results.
Who is a good candidate for Botox treatments?
Healthy men and women who are looking to improve lines of the face and neck may be good candidates for treatment with Botox. Botox should not be performed on pregnant women or individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome.
XEOMIN®
XEOMIN® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults for a short period of time (temporary).
It is not known if XEOMIN is safe and effective in children under 18 years of age. XEOMIN® is the only clinically proven anti-wrinkle injection uniquely purified to remove unnecessary proteins. (Studies have not been performed to determine whether the presence or absence of accessory proteins has a long-term effect on safety or efficacy.)
